False Fact

Yeah, well apparently not. It’s made of seeds. According to Wikipedia the seeds are from the coffee cherries found on the coffee tree. The misconception is because people just call the seeds beans. Though this is more of a technicality than utter bullshit it’s still interesting to see how many people think that coffee bean is actually the scientific term for what coffee is made of.

Technically speaking there are only 46 states in the USA. The other four refer to themselves as commonwealths Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia are all commonwealths. According to Wikipedia, “This designation, which has no constitutional impact, emphasizes that they have a “government based on the common consent of the people” as opposed to one legitimized through their earlier Royal Colony status that was derived from the King of Great Britain.”

Penguins mate with whoever most convenient. Most penguins remain monogamous for the duration of the breeding period, which can be anywhere from 50 days for fairy penguins to 16 months for king penguins. After breeding season, however, all bets are off. While penguins do generally try to retain the same mates from year to year (62% for Adélie penguins, 82% for Chinstraps, and 90% for gentoos [source]), in most species they tend to pair off with different partners the next year. Reasons given vary from not wanting to wait around for the same penguin (source) to not being able to find each other due to mistiming (source)

Cooking certain kinds of vegetables such as onions and garlic can actually increase the variety and potency of nutrients that get released inside a person’s digestive track. In addition, cooking vegetables also eliminates the potential for bacterial contamination such as salmonella.

False Fact

Strawberries are not berries. They actually are an example of an “aggregate fruit”, forming from a flower that has many ovaries; the ovary being the part of the flower that eventually develops and ripens into a fruit. Once the ovaries are pollinated, the ovaries will swell and eventually form the strawberry as we think of it. As noted, strawberries form from a flower that has many ovaries. This makes them a complex fruit, much like blackberries or raspberries. Actual berries, though, are what are known as “simple fruits”, meaning they form from a flower that has only one ovary, such as grapes.

False Fact

No. A camel’s hump is a giant mound of fat, actually. In a healthy, well-fed camel, the hump can weigh as much as 80 pounds (35 kilograms)! Human beings and most animals store their fat mixed in with muscle tissue or in a layer right beneath the skin. Camels are the only animals with a hump. The hump allows a camel to survive an extremely long time (up to two weeks) without food if need be. Because camels typically live in the desert, where food can be scarce for long stretches, this is important.
